Riga Small theatre
Indian classical dance performance NRITHYA SANDHYA
Shalini Shivashankar and Pallavi Anand

Indian classical dance duo - Shalini Shivashankar and Pallavi Anand are
going to visit Riga on the 2nd of August. Shalini is the founder and
director of the Upahaar School of Dance, which has inspirational slogan: "Legs may learn the dance steps, but only spirit dances".

The name of the performance "Nrithya Sandhya" simply means "evening of
dance". It is common to spend evenings relaxing, attending a nice event,
with family, or just by yourself. Shalini Shivashankar and Pallavi
Anand dance duet will fulfil all wishes on the 2nd of August at the Riga
Small theatre.
Indian classical dance concert always starts with a
light mood and reaches an extatic culmination towards the end. Intricate
movements, elegant gestures, fast rhythms, and dancers’ interaction
will create festive mood and sacral atmosphere that will make the
audience forget the daily routine and plunge into another reality. Even
though "Evening of Dance" could be interpreted in different ways, in the
Indian classical dance tradition a dance event means that during the
performance the theatre is transformed into a Vedic temple inhabited
with ancient deities. The dancers will lead the audience towards the
sensation that could be characterized as spiritual awakening.

During the last five years several Indian classical dance masters could
be seen perform in Riga. The uniqueness of "Nrithya Sandhya" is the
possibility to enjoy the special atmosphere created by the dance duet,
delivered by the energy and inspiration that flow from glance to glace,
from heart to heart, and lead to enlightenment.

Indian dance show
Vishva Natya alokana or "Contemplating the dance of the universe"
On May 9th, theater-club Hamlet (Old Riga)

On May 9th in the theater-club Hamlet in Old Riga Indian dance show Vishva
Natya alokana or "Contemplating the dance of the universe" will be
presented.

Vedic space and gods are often depicted dancing.
The most important deities and airy beings in ancient writings are
marked with the word "nritta" which means "dancing".

Great dance is tuned with the universe and creation in all its forms. Looking
at the movement of the universe, we get an idea of the infinite,
intangible existence and interaction of all existing elements. A dancer
with his dance embodies the continuous rhythm of life. Grand laws of the
universe, an idea of eternal opposition of good and evil, as well as
the subtle inner world of a man find their way to the viewer through the
instruments of Indian dance, such as: movement, rhythm and the art of
expression.

Beauty of Indian dance and a rich palette of emotions
allow spectators to forget everyday worries and fall into another
dimension, covering everything from lightning-quick rhythms and bright
bouquet of colors to subtle elegant movements and emotional interplay.

Dr.Janaki Rangarajan Bharatanatyam master class

Culture center Bharata invite bharatanatyam dancers to Dr. Janaki Rangarajan master class "Understanding Karanas" on  May 27.
Master class time:  11AM - 2PM.
Address: Stabu street 10/4, Riga, Latvia
A preliminary price for the class - 20 EUR.

Masterclass description

Dr.Janaki Rangarajan’s master class, “Understanding Karanas,” will focus on
understanding the theoretical and practical aspects of “Karanas.” Just
as the “Adavus” are the basic units of dance in Bharatanatyam, Karanas
were the basic units of dance in ancient India. The “Natyasastra,”
written over 2000 years ago, describes 108 Karanas in use at that time.
As Indian regional classical dance styles such as Bharatanatyam developed through the past few centuries, the use of Karanas declined.
Janaki’s Guru, Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam, theorized that the Karanas which are
immortalized as sculptures on temple facades in places like Chidambaram
and Thanjavur were not merely static postures but are actually complete
movements. After exhaustive research, Dr. Padma deciphered how each
Karana can be performed. Karanas are made up of three elements: Caris
(leg movements), Nrtta Hastas (hand movements) and Sthanas (static
poses).
In the master class, Janaki will select certain Karanas and
teach participants the Caris, Nrtta Hastas and Sthanas that make up
those Karanas so that participants will understand how a Karana can be
performed. Through this master class, in addition to learning this new
dance vocabulary that can be used to enhance Bharatanatyam choreography,
participants will gain a deeper awareness and appreciation about
ancient Indian theatre and dance movements which were common and
prevalent all over Asia. “Nadanamamani”
